About Us
The Untied States Custom House in Newburyport was built in 1835 in order to collect tariffs on goods brought into port by merchants vessels.
It was designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument and the U.S. Treasury Building, in the Greek Revival style that was so popular in the early republic. It was constructed of granite quarried in nearby Cape Ann, and transported by barge to the site, and cost $23,000 to construct at that time.
The Museum features exhibits on the early maritime history of Newburyport, including the US Customs Service, the US Coast Guard, as well as many other aspects of life and work in this historical port town!
Please check our website for hours and directions.
Admission is $8 for adults, free for kids under 12, Newburyport residents, and museum members.
