Biking in Holland - Presented by Coastal Trails Coalition, Inc.
Biking in Holland--Lessons and Inspiration
The small nation of the Netherlands is justly famous for its cycling infrastructure and culture. An exceptional network of dedicated cycle paths has been built which allows cyclists to ride safely and comfortably through major cities and across the country. As a result of bicycle-friendly policies and planning, there are more bicycles than people in Holland, and more than one quarter of all trips are by bike.
As our local network of trails and bike lanes continues to grow, we can look to the Dutch for inspiration and guidance. Last year CTC presented a film comparing bicycling in Dutch and American cities. This follow-up event will offer a more in-depth look at the specific steps that communities can take to encourage and support cycling.
Newburyport residents Rick and Sheila Taintor have traveled to the Netherlands five times in the last four years, and each time they have cycled in the cities and the countryside. They will share their experiences cycling in several regions of the Netherlands, including a bike and barge tour through North Holland -- a wonderful and relaxed way to see the country by bike.
In addition to personal experiences, this evening will focus on the elements that contribute to a bicycle-friendly environment. See a short film about how the people of the Netherlands convinced policy-makers to integrate cycling and walking in transportation planning. Learn how the Dutch have made cycling so easy and safe by careful planning and attention to detail.
The evening will help us imagine the possibilities for Newburyport and the surrounding towns. Come see what the Dutch have done and think about how we might adapt their ideas here.
